Lawyer for Bollywood star Salman Khan, Dipesh Mehta has told BBC Asian Network’s Love Bollywood show, that the case against Khan for animal cruelty has been blown out of proportion due to huge media attention.

Dipesh Mehta said Khan needed a “fully fledged trial” and she wanted to see out of prison soon. He said: “Salman is not only a client, he’s also a dear friend.

“With respect the way presently the media….work, they follow celebrities and the way they trying to keep track of things without knowing the law, without having complete facts, they [Media] form their own opinion.

“And without proper trial people are either found guilty or otherwise. This is something one has to pay a price for being so popular and unless someone remains with Mr Khan or travels around with him, he or she will not understand how much his fans love him”.

Meanwhile Animal Rights campaigner Maneka Gandhi (Indira Gandhi’s former daughter in law) also told the Asian Network that the rich and famous can easily flout the law and that judges in the Indian judicial system needed to take their jobs more seriously.

She said: “He’s [Khan] gotten away because he’s a celebrity…I’ve sent hundreds of people to jail for hunting and it was all poor people. It’s only because he was a celebrity that the court took it’s time and he got such a reduced sentence otherwise anybody else would have been in jail by now.

“It’s a status thing…it’s to break the law here is a status thing - to run through red lights to be mean to policemen, to immediately develop heart conditions when you’re sent to jail…is par for the course for the rich.

“If the judges would take their roles more seriously, as they have in this case then it would stop, but if the judges keep making a difference between rich and poor, then obviously you can’t blame the rich for taking advantage of that.”

Khan has been convicted of poaching a chinkara deer at the Ghoda farm near Jodhpur on the night of September 28, 1998 while filming Sooraj Barjatya’s blockbuster Hum Saath Saath Hain.

Khan has been in the jail for five days, serving a five-year sentence in the blackbuck hunting case and is waiting for relief from Rajasthan High Court.

The actor’s latest film, Marigold, his first English- Hindi film has also been released world wide.
