SALMAN KHAN, the King of controversy is once again in news for reasons other than his films. A fatwa was recently issued against the star by Bareily based Daarul-Ifta-Manzar-r-e-Islam on the pretext of Khan having actively participated in a Ganesh Puja in Mumbai.

On Tuesday (18 September) night, Salman was seen performing the aarti along with signer Sonu Nigam at the Lalbaugcha Raja Mandal, Mumbai’s most iconic Ganesh Mandal.

This outraged a Muslim cleric who issued a fatwa against him stating that Islam prohibits idol worship and that Salman would have to read the kalmas all over again in order to be considered a Muslim.

Ganesh Mahotsav was also celebrated with great zeal and vigour at the Khan residence in Bandra. The family brought home a Ganesh idol for one-and-a-half days and indulged in festivities.

Salman, along with step-mom Helen was seen dancing with his nephew hoisted over his shoulders during the procession in which the idol was taken for immersion.

Salim Khan, Samlan’s father was fuming on hearing about the fatwa. He said that the Khans believed in cosmopolitan lifestyle and had members of almost every religion living under one roof.

Islam never teaches anyone to disrespect any religion. On the contrary it teaches: Sab ka Khuda ek hai.

Salim Khan further went on to add that people issuing these fatwas don’t even know what Islam is all about.

He said the religious fanatics only thrive on hatred and this has been expressed by means of the fatwa.

Irfan Qureshi, an Urdu scholar says, “The issuing of the fatwa is nothing more than a publicity gimmick. Nobody has the right to impose anything on a person. Right to freedom of religion is one of our Constitutional Rights.

This is an outright violation of one’s rights. Our nation thrives on the principles of secularism and one cannot be barred from participating in a religious activity.”

Ankan Ahuja, retail manager says, “People like the person who has issued the fatwa must be penalized.

It is on account of such characters that our country experiences communal upheavals. We need to understand that religious harmony is the solution to various problems prevailing in our country.”

Religion teaches us to respect one another and not fight over petty issues. It has immense power. It inspires love, forgiveness, harmony and peace. It can also influence wars, riots, terrorism and hatred.

Religious tolerance is the foundation on which our country’s principles are laid. We cannot forget that we are the children of the same soil and cannot thrive on religion-based hatred.

Anoushka Simar, Political Science teacher says, “We are living in a democratic nation where everybody has the right to practice any religion they want. Salman has not done anything wrong by performing the puja.

In fact Helen, his step-mom is a Christian while Malaika Arora Khan, his sister-in-law is a Hindu. This star family should be an inspiration for the people of India which portrays that all religions can live in harmony under one roof.”

Suman Shorewala, businesswoman from Delhi says, “Stars in our country are treated as idols. Salman has displayed a generous act of Hindu-Muslim unity. This is what India stands for.

Probably the organization that has issued the fatwa failed to see this fact and was more concerned about the nitty-grittys of religion that don’t even matter on a broader scale.”

When one talks about religious harmony, another star family has set an example before us. Shah Rukh Khan and wife Gauri hail from different religions and are a prime example of love and companionship.

Iram Haziq, environmentalist says, “With fusion marriages becoming the norm, secular practices are being widely preached and practices.

I don’t know why some people make a bid deal out of nothing. Salman has beautifully exemplified Hindu-Muslim unity and nobody has the right to condemn him for that.

The Holy Quran teaches us to develop feelings of tolerance and understanding towards each other and not develop communal hatred.

Bur people like the Maulvi who has decreed the fatwa against Salman only inspire fanaticism. He probably doesn’t even understand his own religion.”

Harun Samuel, a marketing manager says, “I belong to a very cosmopolitan background and feel that religion is a matter of personal choice.

Had Salman been the President of India or our Prime Minister, then also, would the fatwa have been issued against him? I feel that it is a social responsibility that needs to be shouldered by religious organizations that they must encourage such acts that promote religious harmony instead of condemning them.”

India is a secular country and we need to understand that any issue in the name of religion is only used as a publicity stunt to inspire religious intolerance.
