Indian police arrested Bollywood star Salman Khan on Saturday. Khan was sent to jail for a 2006 conviction of shooting and killing endangered species of antelope. Khan was also accused to slitting the throat of a gazelle and giving it to chefs at his hotel to cook.

Khan appealed the conviction but his appeal was rejected. He surrendered to police when they arrested him at the Jodhpur airport. “He has been arrested at the airport lounge and the arrest warrant was presented to him there,” said a police official.

Khan was taken to a local prison and said he planned to surrender “as a responsible citizen and somebody who abides by the law and respects the judiciary.” He was accompanied by his lawyer, his father Salim Khan, and his brother Sohail Khan. Bollywood actor Yukta Mukhi today came out strongly in support of her colleague Salman Khan who is currently lodged in Jodhpur jail in poaching case by saying law abiding citizens should be respected.

Mukhi, a former Miss World said: “Salman Khan surrendered in the Jodhpur court after it rejected his appeal and this proves he is a law abiding citizen. Hence, sympathy should be shown on him.”

When asked about the jail sentences awarded to both Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan, she just said, “Law abiding citizens should be respected.” The actor who was here to inaugurate a swimming and fitness centre hoped her forthcoming release “Mem Sahib” would prove to be box-office success.

Salman Khan’s first night at the central jail in Jodhpur was restless. He slept late and woke up early on Sunday to a breakfast of grams, gud and tea. Dinner on Saturday was lauki and chapatis.

The actor participated in morning prayers with the other inmates but kept to himself, sources said. A routine health check was also carried out and he was found to be fit.

The hearing on bail application of actor Salman Khan, charged in the chinkara poaching case will be heard on Wednesday.

Earlier, it was stated that the case was unlikely heard before Wednesday as the case of his appeal has not been listed for hearing by the Jodhpur bench of the Rajasthan High Court on Monday. Salman’s lawyers are expected to submit an urgent application for hearing to the bench and get things moving.
